Standard Treatment Options For Psoriasis

There are standard treatment options for psoriasis patients that most doctors recommend.  These treatment options have been tried, tested, and proven to be effective for most cases of psoriasis.  The proper treatment of psoriasis would depend on the type of psoriasis, the symptoms, the triggers, the severity, and the extent of the affected area.  Before trying any of these treatment, make sure to consult with your doctor.  All these treatments have their own side effects and treating psoriasis with the wrong type of treatment could make your condition worse.

  1. Topical Psoriasis Drug.  Topical treatment of psoriasis is provided for mild to moderate cases where the psoriasis is localized.  Topical drugs are usually the first line of defense in treating psoriasis.  These drugs are usually creams, lotions or ointments that are applied on the affected area for as long as the symptoms persist and sometimes longer to prevent flare ups.
  • Over-the-counter psoriasis treatment.  There are plenty of over the counter psoriasis treatments available that can easily be purchased from any drug store.  Most over the counter treatments are used as maintenance treatments to prevent and reduce the severity of psoriasis flare ups.  The most popular ingredients used for over-the-counter psoriasis drugs include moisturizers, coal tar, salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, capsaicin, aloe vera, and jojoba.
  • Prescribed psoriasis treatment.  Certain cases of psoriasis need specific care, which is why some topical psoriasis drugs need to be prescribed.  Corticosteroids are often prescribed to control psoriasis lesions.  Other commonly prescribed topical drugs for psoriasis are those that contain anthralin, vitamin A and vitamin D.  Antibiotic ointments and creams may also be prescribed to prevent infections of psoriasis lesions.
  1. Systemic Psoriasis Drugs.  Systemic psoriasis drugs are usually prescribed for moderate to severe widespread psoriasis.  Systemic psoriasis drugs affect the entire body, not just the skin, so they can be used to treat other symptoms of psoriasis. These types of drugs are given either in oral form as an injection.
  • Traditional systemic psoriasis drugs.  As the name suggest, these are the type of drugs traditionally prescribed for psoriasis.  The most commonly used traditional systemic are acitretin, cyclosporine, and methotrexate.  Acitretin is an oral retinoid, it works by slowing down the rate of skin cell growth.  Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressant drug which suppresses the immune system to control the symptoms of psoriasis.  Methotrexate, a drug traditionally used to treat cancer, effectively treats psoriasis by binding and suppressing the enzyme that promotes rapid skin cell growth.
  • Biological systemic psoriasis drugs.  Biologics are a new class of drugs used to treat psoriasis.  Biologics are mainly proteins derived from living cells.  These drugs work by blocking immune cells, enzymes, or other proteins that play a role in the development of psoriasis.  The biologics often used for the treatment of psoriasis include ustekinumab, TNF-alpha blockers, and T-cell blockers like alefacept.
  1. Psoriasis Light Treatment.  Cases of psoriasis that don’t respond to topical or systemic therapy can try different forms of psoriasis light treatment.  Psoriasis skin lesions exposed to controlled amounts of light in the form of laser, UVA, UVB, and sunlight usually resolves within a few weeks with long term relief.  Light therapy works by slowing down the process of skin cell reproduction.
